Title: Helterskelter goes to Wales
Post by: neil m on October 05, 2018, 11:13:26 PM
We had planned to go on the L&L this time, but as that was closed due to the Summer water shortage I decided to visit the Llangollen and Montgomery Canals instead. I reasoned that as the Llangollen was a feeder supply for the Shroppie it would surely be open and it is such a lovely trip.
We towed to Whixall Marina and launched there, its on an arm off the Llangollen Canal called the Prees branch, the Slipway is a bit of a steep one and guarded by a family of Swans but we were soon launched and on our way to Ellesmere.

We reached Ellesmere that night and passed Telfords offices at the entrance to the arm there, we also met some friends there on Wilderness boats who by chance were cruising the Llangollen for two weeks.

We had booked to go down through Frankton locks onto the Monty the next morning which was lovely, the first two are a staircase and then a couple more, then you come to Graham Palmer lock which is named after the man who founded the Waterway Recovery Group.

Over the next couple of days we explored the Monty and once we got to the current head of navigation we walked down a bit to look at the work the Shropshire Union Canal Society have been doing along with the WRG, there was a tripboat down there and Historic boat Saturn. one day we got a bus into Oswestry to have a look at this pretty Market Town, the Monty was a lovely quiet trip probably the opposite of the Llangollen with all the hire boats.

We returned back up onto the Llangollen and headed on through Chirk to Trevor over the big Aquaduct in very windy conditions then up to Llangollen where we stayed a night in the basin.

If you click on image 3103 and the ones on the Aquaducts they should play as videos :)

Hi Neil
Looked like a great week-a Caraboat over the aqueduct-brilliant. I used Ruby Tuesday as a caravan a lot this summer but found someone who can reconnect the engine for me so hope to get out before winter sets in.
The forum has been really quiet for so long so it’s good to know someone’s out there!! I must learn to do Flickr and upload som3 photos.
Cheers
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
Hope you can post on your adventures with "Ruby Tuesday" as It would be great to hear about what other people are doing with there boats whether it be using them or working on them.

Hi Vic,
Great to hear from you, It was seeing the article in Canal&Riverboat in Feb 2004 of you and Mirage at Frankton locks that made me think how versatile a Caraboat could be, little did I know that one month later I would buy Helterskelter at a local boat yard that was closing down.

Lovely photo’s as usual from Neil and Bev, so inspiring, I notice you don’t mention your “winged chairs” LOL.
It is fantastic to hear from Victor I wish you would post more photo’s from your archive Victor (please, please, pretty please).
I know “Ruby Tuesday” has been used as a caravan and a boat this season could we see some photo’s of “her” being used as they were designed eg caravan/boat on land as well as water.
Can I suggest any photo’s published on this site are copyrighted to prevent wide spread use without the copyright owners consent.
Best wishes
