Caraboat General / Future of this Site
« on: November 01, 2017, 12:49:32 PM »
Hi all

I hope you are enjoying the Caraboat forums and find it useful. As you will surmise, running a site like this costs time and money. Many of you will know that the caraboat forum was originally set up by me for my father in law John Nelson, a great Caraboat enthusiast.

Since John's death several years ago I have maintained the forum, paid for the hosting costs and resolved difficulties with security attacks. As I personally have no interest in Caraboats I am unwilling to keep doing this if it costs me money.

A couple of years ago I set up a Subscription option on the site so that users could donate a small fee (15) per year to support the forums. Unfortunately, whether due to confusion or lack of interest, the vast majority of users on this forum have declined the option to support it, despite buying and selling caraboats through forum contacts.

This has led me to the decision to change the subscription process for the forum to a paid option only from January. To access the forum the user will need to set up a subscription at 25 per year. If there is still not enough uptake, then I will have no option but to close the site down.

To change your user type to a paid subscription before then, at a reduced rate of 15, follow these instructions:

  • Login as usual and choose the Profile option from the menu, then the Account Settings.
  • On this page, choose the Actions option and Paid Subscriptions will be the first choice. Follow the instructions there and you will help support the forum.

If you get any trouble doing this let me know and I can help from here.

Many thanks

Hi All

Thanks for the suggestion of a Donation button. As you are aware it takes time to moderate and support the Caraboat forums, which I am happy to do, but it does cost me money to run these.

The forum already has a means for you to donate, if you change your User Type to Paid User. To do this, login as usual and choose the Profile option from the menu, then the Account Settings.

On this page, choose the Actions option and Paid Subscriptions will be the first choice. Follow the instructions there and you will help support the forum.

If you get any trouble doing this let me know and I can help from here.

Many thanks

Hi Mick

Because the forum is getting spammed constantly by hackers trying to join, I have stopped automatic registration. Unfortunately their application must have been in the last batch I deleted. Could you ask them to re-register and I will look out for it and admit them instantly?

Kind regards

Site Sugggestions / Re: Problems with verification

Thank you for your carefully considered note. It is so nice to hear the gratitude the users show for this free service.

As our longer term members are aware, the forum was down last year for a while because we were 'hacked'. If we remove the verification step we will be hacked again and the forum will be removed permanently. I do not have the time or the inclination to keep fighting the hackers. If the verification step is too much I suggest you set up your own forum as you are obviously an expert in solving these problems.

Our regular members seem to have no issues with these steps, or are they just too polite to mention it?

It appears the site is again being reported as malicious. I have upgraded the forum to the newer version and stripped all bad code out again.

If it continues to be attached like this I may have no option but to delete the whole thing and set it up again. This would require members re-registering but hopefully no posts will be lost in this process.

I will keep you informed.

Some little toerag had hacked the site using a weakness in the previous version of the forum software we use. We are now patched fully up to the new version and Google has stopped reporting the site as bad.

I will keep an eye on things closely for the next couple of months to check no more attacks are happening.

It seems that anything put out to the 'public' these days will be vandalised, from graffiti on walls to hacking websites. Why do they do it?

Yes, John died last year. The forum pretty much runs itself now. The website hasn't been updated as there is no-one to direct the changes.

Was there something specific you wanted as I am happy to do the changes if the members agree.

Hi Neil

Your help in supporting the site is much appreciated. There is a small cost in maintaining the site, and although John is not now around, I feel it is respectful to him to keep this site 'alive' for as long as the users require it. Ay help i nthis area is much appreciated.

Caraboats For Sale / Caraboat for Sale
« on: August 13, 2007, 09:39:19 AM »

John's Caraboat is now for sale. As you know John passed away last month, but before he died he asked that the caraboat be sold and the proceeds go to his three children. He reckoned it was worth around ?3000. Anyone who knew John will know he kept his Caraboat immaculate. This is now sold, sorry  :(

He had just installed a new Chassis part, pictured here (the white part). It has been fully installed, but needs glassing in:
